The St.Johns River, the second longest in the USA that flows south to north, passes through, and is in some way the backbone of, Jacksonville, Florida. Just south of the city the river is over three miles wide, but as if meanders through the downtown area it narrows to about five hundred yards, and then gets wider until it crosses the Intracoastal Waterway and makes its way to the Atlantic Ocean via Mayport.
There are seven bridges that cross the river between downtown and the mouth of the river at Mayport, plus of course the Mayport Ferry. There is even a restaurant called Seven Bridges on the Southside of the city.
The downtown area comprises of some high rises as found in all cities, and these make for good photographic opportunities. I have included a good number of thee all taken from the boat in the river, as are all the pictures in this blog.
The river is rich with shipping, and in fact will get busier once the major deepening dredge is finished. Crowley Maritime is a major local shipping line dealing mainly with Puerto Rico and the Caribbean and I feature one of their ships, the Perla Del Caride, in this post. Jacksonville is the home port for the Carnival Ecstacy cruise ship, but currently there are others from Norwegian Cruise Lines parked here during the CoronaVirus Pandemic.
This great river offers boating and fishing as well as commerce, and has some really nice property along its banks.
