A flight from Anchorage to King Salmon airport on the Katmai Peninsular, then a short 30 minute De Havalland Otter Float Plane circa 1950 to Brookes Falls, the world famous place for bear spotting. the salmon are coming up stream to pawn, and they have to jump a four foot waterfall to do so. The bears just hang about and grab a few – literally shooting fish in a barrel!
The bears do take time off to play and spar with each other, a behavior common to all bear breeds and one we had seen in Churchill, Manitoba when we stayed on the tundra and lived among the Polar Bears for four days. The bears at Brookes are Grizzlies, identified by the lump on their necks and the flat face. Their claws are something else and they use them very dexterously when dealing with the salmon
